E
E1
A European standard for a 2048Mbit/s communications link, usually comprising
32 timeslots of 64kbit/s data or signalling information.
Echo suppression
When a signal is transmitted and received over
separate go and return paths is re-combined into a single bi-directional
path, for example the 2 to 4 wire conversion in a telephone, some of the
signal will be reflected by an imperfect impedance match in the converter
(hybrid). This will be heard at the distant end as an echo. Echo suppression
is the processing of signals to minimise the echo and help to separate
the received signal from the transmitted signal.
Edge of Coverage
The boundary of the coverage is the satellite footprint. This is usually
a gradual transition, but to illustrate the footprint, the satellite service
provider will usually choose a minimum power level to act as a hard boundary.
EDI
Electronic Data Interchange, the standards and action of exchanging data
for business transactions
Elevation
The angle above the horizon that the antenna makes
in order to point at the satellite
Encryption
Encoding of a signal to make it unintelligible
to eavesdroppers
Erlang
A unit of usage of a resource, especially a telephone
network. Used when capacity planning
Eutelsat
European Telecommunications Satellite
Extranet
An IP based network connecting a community of suppliers
and customers.
